Customer Review: Great map
My husband and I will be on two (back to back) South American cruises in 2009, going from Buenos Aires to Valparaiso, via Cape Horn. This map is fantastic…we’ve spent some enjoyable hours contemplating the map and our upcoming trip. The map helps put into perspective the whole idea of the South American coastline, Cape Horn, the channels, the strait, the fjords and the ports of call. I couldn’t find anything this good just browsing through websites, we can lay the map out in front of us and see it all in one go. We will be taking the map with us on the cruises too, of course.

America’s Great Loop Cruise Routes

America’s Great Loop Cruise Routes The map has been changed slightly to show a multi-colored ghost line of the various routes. The East coast leg is green to represent sping; the Northern leg is orange to represent summer in Canada and the Great Lakes areas; the Inland Rivers leg is brown to represent fall. There is also a barcode in the lower right hand corner which can be covered up with your boat card prior to framing.
Customer Review: Comment on UPC by reviewer
Another reviewer commented that the map is not suitable for framing due to a UPC barcode in the lower right corner. We suggest that you cover the barcode with your boat card prior to framing. Boat cards are used by cruising boaters and are the same size as business cards which fit perfectly over the barcode. (The barcode is required by many resellers. Sorry about that.)
Customer Review: Not Suitable for Framing
For all you “dreamers” out there who may be interested in framing your map, please be aware that although not shown in the advertised image, there is a printed UPC Code Bar printed in the lower right corner that is NOT removable. The map is misrepresented in Amazon’s advertised picture, and is NOT suitable for framing. In all fairness, if you go to the Stob’s website (www.greatloop.com) the UPC code DOES appear in their advertised image.

Cruise of the Lanikai: Incitement to War (Bluejacket Books)

Cruise of the Lanikai: Incitement to War (Bluejacket Books) In early December 1941 in the Philippines, a young Navy ensign named Kemp Tolley was given his first ship command, an old 76-foot schooner that had once served as a movie prop in John Ford’s “The Hurricane.” Crewed mostly by Filipinos who did not speak English and armed with a cannon that had last seen service in the Spanish-American War, the Lanikai was under top-secret presidential orders to sail south into waters where the Japanese fleet was thought to be. Ostensibly the crew was to spy on Japanese naval movements, but to Tolley it was clear that their mission was to create an incident that would provoke war.

Events overtook the plan, however, when Pearl Harbor was bombed before the Lanikai could get underway. When Bataan and Corregidor fell, she was ordered to set sail for Australia and became one of the few U.S. naval vessels to escape the Philippines. In this book Tolley tells the saga of her great adventure during these grim, early days of the war and makes history come alive as he regales the reader with details of the operation and an explanation of President Roosevelt’s order. Tolley’s description of their escape in Japanese warship-infested waters ranks with the best of sea tales, and few will be able to forget the Lanikai’s 4,000-mile, three-month odyssey.
Customer Review: The Pacific War at the Beginning
If not brought to my attention by a friend, I would have missed this remarkable book. Tolley was the US Navy skipper of the Lanikai, a converted island sailing schooner, in Manila Bay when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. This book is three tales in one, interwoven with reasonable success. First, it is an account of FDR’s concern that the Japanese would attack the British and Dutch in Asia and the USA would not have the support of public opinion which was needed for the United States’ inevitable entry into the fray against the Axis as soon as possible. Tolley makes a reasonable case that the vulnerable Lanikai was to be placed in harms way possibly to create an incident (such as the Japanese sinking of the USS Panay in China four years earlier), but the pace of war overtook whatever plan was intended. Secondly, the book is a story of the amazing flight of the Lanikai south from the collapsing Philippines to Java, and then, as the defense of the Dutch East Indies collapsed, onward to Australia. It was one of the few ships, civilian or military, to escape either the invading Japanese armadas moving south or the Indian Ocean sweep of the fleet that had bombed Pearl Harbor, a sweep that destroyed most of the ships trying to escape Java toward India. If this were not enough, this is a clear story of the early tragic months of the war in the Pacific, at sea, in the Philippines, and in the Indies, as well-trained Japanese forces swept all before them, and the hastily assembled ABDA (Australian, British, Dutch, American) defenses collapsed. I learned a lot of interesting history and enjoyed the small boat saga too.
Customer Review: A great sea yarn
The Lanikai was originally assigned a suicide mission to get the US into the war; this was however overcome by events (meaning Pearl Harbor) and the story becomes an escape yarn, as the sailing boat escapes the Philippines, and makes its way south.
A fascinating sea yarn, that ranks there with the O’Brian novels, only this one is true.

Cruising and Pregnancy

If you are in your 7th month of your pregnancy and are thinking of going on a cruise as your last hurrah before the baby arrives, you may want to think again.
I was surprised to find out that each cruise line has their own guidelines for expecting moms, with most not accepting pregnant guests who are past 24 weeks gestation.

The official reason is that the lack of neo-natal care facilities onboard the ship would prevent them from being unable to care for a baby born at this gestation.

I have put together a list of popular cruise lines and their pregnancy requirements:

Princess, Carnival, Holland America, Norweigian, Silversea, Regent Seven Seas, all say that they will make every effort to accommodate you, providing you have not entered the 24th week of pregnancy when the cruise ends.

Royal Carribean, Celebrity are a bit more lax, but will not accept guests who have entered their third trimester of pregnancy (27th week) at the beginning or at any time during their cruise vacation. If you decide to fly and stay at a resort, most airlines usually let any woman with a normal pregnancy and no previous history of premature labor to travel up to and including her 36th week.

Customer Review: Poorly written, unhelpful advice, excellent pictures
I am thoroughly disappointed with the information in this book. I was looking for a guide that would help me with all of my shore excursions. Instead, each of my cities have half of a page or so of basic information.

The book is poorly written. Parts of it are incomprehensible. It is written for the British traveller but is not written in the Queen’s English! Other parts are filled with travel agent gibberish.

The pictures were outstanding, as is true of most Insight Guides. I was just hoping that with the Discovery Channel affiliation that the content would have improved. I was wrong.
Customer Review: “All the information you will ever need on cruising the Med”
Of the many guide and reference books that mention cruising in the Mediterranean, I think I may have come across the ultimate reference book on the subject — “Mediterranean Cruises”, a compilation of expertise from a number of well-known journalists, editors and contributors.

Like other reference guides, this book arms the reader with all the information required to decide on when and where one might select as cruise destinations within the Mediterranean. However, apart from the detailed and accurate descriptions of places, sites, cities and towns, I would also recommend this book solely on the quality of its photography. Should any college or university offer credit- hours on Mediterranean Cruises, here is a book that, in my mind, would certainly qualify as required reading.

However, I wouldn’t suggest the book be read like a textbook. You may want to pick and choose your areas or places of interest. Here is where you will find the book’s index to be second to none. And, while surprises are oftentimes pleasant, I believe when it comes to cruising, being prepared with as much information as possible prior to departure can prevent an unpleasant cruise experience. Having taken several Mediterranean cruises years ago with my family, I would have welcomed having this “bible” handy during those preparations.

Like all other Insight Guides, in addition to providing detailed maps and superb descriptions of all destinations, this book offers its readers a wealth of travel tips. If I may borrow the motto from the Boy Scouts, I believe anyone who reads “Mediterranean Cruises” prior to actually taking one will certainly be prepared.

Customer Review: Great for deciding on a cruise line or ship
If you have never cruised, this book is an excellent introduction for what to expect from a cruise, shore excursions, incidentals, travel insurance. Brown and Golden go in depth in comparing the different cruise lines and ships. The information presented is very up to date.

I bought this book primarily for port information, therefore the individual cruise ship information, however detailed, was of no use to me because I already booked my cruise. If you are in the process of deciding on a cruise line this book is very helpful.

The port information is excellent, it’s provided as a very easy read. Frommer’s gives the current admission prices for attractions and also gives excellent tips on specific excursions as well as contact numbers. The information here is better than anything of I found online.

Highly recommend with Anne Vipond’s Alaska by Cruise Ship.
Customer Review: Alaska Cruises & Ports of Call 2006
This book has its strengths and weaknesses. If you are very early in the planning stages of an Alaskan Cruise this is a great book to help you select which cruise line and ship you should select. It is the strongest of the books I reviewed in describing the strengths and weaknesses of the various cruise ships. In fact over ? of the book deals with ships not the actual trip. There are shorts sections on the various ports of call. There is not a lot of depth to really get you excited about what you might want to do. Most ports have about four pages that offer walking tours, best cruise line excursions, local operator excursions and shopping.

Customer Review: Good books for teens and adults
This book set is both appropriate for teens and adults to read. If you are interested in nursing you will probably be interested in these books.
Customer Review: Retro Detective Nurse Series Makes A Comeback
Cherry Ames makes a comeback. Fresh, lively confections that enthralled me as a kid don’t hold up quite as well to the adult reader, but that’s not the point. Mystery Writers of America member Helen Wells fleshed out a peppy prewar characterization of a high-spirited eighteen year-old nurse whose high-spirited, curious ways get her in entertaining fixes as she pursues her nursing degree and a few dreamy doctors. I bought the first few books at a garage sale in the early 80’s for 25 cents and they still have a place of honor on my bookshelf. The later books tended to have a churned- out, formulaic quality with a bevy of different writers who can’t capture the zeitgeist. I think today’s kids would definitely have a snoozefest with these books. In addition, my mother, who graduated from nursing school in the early 60’s, tried to get through the first book, but couldn’t. I guess there weren’t enough draconian spinster teachers, full shifts on the floor, and egomanical doctors for that realistic kick!

Customer Review: Pretty, Pretty heavy. Pretty interesting.
Insight Guides usually are good for preparation for a trip but not so good for the nitty gritty of the trip. In the case of Caribbean Cruises however, this book worked well to choose which things to target in our one day per island off the boat.
